Pavement shrub roses are a hardy variety of roses that grows low to the ground. They are a smaller variety of roses, perfect for adding a splash of color to your landscape or gracing the sides of your walkways. Pavement shrub roses need to be pruned once a year in early spring right after the last frost occurs. By pruning your shrub roses you will be able to sculpt the direction the buds grow and reduce the bush to leave only the healthiest best producing canes.
Instructions
Step 1
Cut away any top growth. Remove any crossing canes and all overgrown branches. Healthy rose bushes will promote development and growth.
Step 2
Cut off all dead branches.
Step 3
Cut off any dead or discolored canes. Healthy canes have a white interior. If the canes that you are left with have a brown or discolored interior, cut further down the cane of the rose bush.
Step 4
Remove any blind shoots. Blind shoots come off the main canes. They're small branches that will not grow any further because they have been damaged by insects or disease.
Step 5
Look for any buds on the remaining canes. If the bud is facing the interior remove that bud. Leave only exterior facing buds.
Step 6
Reinspect your pavement shrub rose in a month to make sure it is growing as you wish. Prune back anything that is growing in the wrong direction.
